Soft Rains

Upgrade! NY
May 2004

Jennifer and Kevin McCoy are Brooklyn-based artists who make projects about how our thoughts, experiences and memories are structured through genre and repetition. In order to focus attention on these structures, they often reexamine classic works of science fiction or television narrative, creating sculptural objects, video projections, or live events from what they find. The McCoys discussed their new projects Eternal Return, Soft Rains, and Second Date, the latter two of which opened at Postmasters Gallery on May 8. These were part of a new cycle of work that made narrative video projections with miniature cameras, motors, and fragments of tiny film sets.

Michael Joaquin Grey started in the center of the art world in 1990 and rapidly developed a new type of creative practice, which is a prototype of today’s new media artist. His work has extended in this last decade from the gallery into biotechnology, information technology, product design, social sculpture and mass media. Most recently he has explored computational cinema and choreography with sound, motion and video primitives. His collaborations and practice have been a model and precursor to how artists would adapt their practice and escape postmodern limits. Read On »

Discussing his work against ideas about artificial intelligence, artificial sculpture, and art history with special emphasis on his hybrid virtual/physical practice.

Michael Rees began his fantastic talk with a review of his early work as a post-minimalist sculptor and his studies with Joseph Beuys as a Fulbright scholar.

He went on to describe work done in the early 90′ that crossed an interest between Pygmalion, in the context of the discourse of male construction of the feminine and dog shows. That eventually led to the engagement with rapid prototyping machines and the integration of digital media into his sculptural work.
